A Message from the Cal Alumni Pride Board

Dear Cal Alumni Pride Member:

Welcome to our second newsletter. Our hope is to keep you and Cal’s estimated 43,000 LGBT alumni connected to our alma mater. In this issue you will meet the board and the four amazing undergraduates we honored last year with Cal Alumni Pride scholarships. You’ll also learn about an alumnus who like many of us took to the streets in response to the passage of Prop 8.

Lastly we’d like to thank the nearly 80 alumni and friends who turned out for our December happy hour. We’re planning activities and events that you won’t want to miss, so be sure to keep an eye out for future e-mails and remember to join us on Facebook.

Enjoy this update and please contact us with feedback.

GO BEARS!

The Cal Alumni Pride scholarship program

Since 1991, Cal Alumni Pride (formerly UC GALA) has awarded 42 scholarships to undergraduate LGBT and LGBT supportive students at Cal. The $1,500 scholarships are awarded annually to students who demonstrate leadership and community involvement who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, or supportive of LGBT issues. Generous contributions from our members have enabled the club to increase the number of scholarships granted from one to four annually. To learn more about the scholarship program and how you can support it, please follow this link.

This year we honored four outstanding undergraduates who have demonstrated leadership in the LGBT community at Cal. Follow this link for more on Phillip Alvarado, Nicole Hess, Richie Nguyen and Heather Ross.

Alumni in the news

On November 4, 2008, 52% of California voters approved Proposition 8, a ballot initiative that amended the state Constitution to restrict the definition of marriage to a union between a man and a woman. The passage of this discriminatory initiative mobilized the LGBT community across the country. Given UC Berkeley’s history of activism, it is no surprise that countless alumni from San Francisco to New York took to the streets in protest. Follow this link to see who appeared in the LA Times.

Have you been in the news or know an LGBT Cal Alumnus who has done something great? Email us at info@calalumnipride.org
