A Message from the Cal Alumni Pride Board

Dear Cal Alumni Pride Member,

Berkeley wouldn't be Berkeley without a good protest, but the recent "Day of Action to Defend Public Education" spread well beyond the borders of campus. The protest grabbed the attention of the Governor and legislators, including the first openly gay Speaker of the State Assembly John Perez (who happens to be an alum). He was being sworn in as thousands demonstrated outside of the capitol building demanding that the state reinvest in public education.  We stand with the students and hope that lawmakers in Sacramento reprioritize funding for UC.

Read on for campus updates, a profile on two Cal alumni whose passion for fashion lead to a successful business, what one gay Cal alumnus thinks of a closeted Republican Senator's hypocrisy, a report on a hate crime at UC Davis, and details about our upcoming events.

As always, please don't hesitate to send your feedback and suggestions to info@calalumnipride.org.

Go Bears!

Anti-gay Lawmaker Leaving Gay Bar Gets DUI

Senator Roy Ashburn, a Republican from Bakersfield, was recently arrested on suspicion of drunk driving.  The Senator--who has one of the worst voting records on gay rights in the Senate--was on his way home from a gay bar in Sacramento.  In a recent radio interview, he proclaimed that he is in fact gay and that his voting record reflects the wishes of the people in his district.

UC Davis LGBT Center Vandalized

"Gays go to hell," "fags," and "queers" were just some of the many hateful messages vandals recently sprayed on the LGBT Center at UC Davis. University administrators and staff at the center chose not to immediately remove the graffiti to raise awareness that LGBT students continue to face harrassment on our campuses.
