Cola Hess, Phillip Alvarado, Richie Nguyen, and Heather Ross
Phillip Alvarado
Phillip was born and raised in San Bernardino, CA. After graduating from Arroyo Valley High School as Salutatorian he came to UC Berkeley as a Political Science and History intended double major. Phillip became involved in the queer community on campus during his sophomore year, enrolling in an LGBT Leadership DeCal and joining Sigma Epsilon Omega, a new gay fraternity at Cal. Phillip became Director of Fundraising for SEO and raised $6,000 dollars for the fraternity. The Queer Resource Center was left to Phillip his junior year and he immediately revamped and renamed the organization to the Queer Alliance and Resource Center. Phillip led the campus campaign against Prop 8 and was the Campus Campaign Manager for Get Up, Vote Down Prop 4 & 8! Phillip graduated in December 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and History.
Nicole Hess
Nicole Hess came to Cal from Los Gatos, CA and is an American Studies major and City and Regional Planning minor. In addition to her studies, Nicole takes great pride in being a Cal Student Ambassador, Undergraduate Assistant at the UC Transportation Center, and Youth Advisory Board Intern at the Pacific Center for Human Growth, Berkeley’s LGBT community and counseling organization. After college, Nicole intends to pursue a law degree with an emphasis in LGBT rights. In her spare time, Nicole enjoys rock climbing, shopping at local farmers’ markets, and exploring American cities.
Richie Nguyen
Richie’s been a volunteer Medic at the Gay Men’s Health Collective at the Berkeley Free Clinic, social chair of the Cal Queer and Asian Club, President of Sigma Epsilon Omega, Cal’s new and only gay fraternity, and Vice President of the Queer Alliance and Resource Center. He’s a Molecular and Cell Biology major in his Senior year. Richie helped plan and implement a Queer and Asian Conference on campus to address the intersection of Queer and Asian identity. He also helped implement the Eliminate Hate Campaign – an informational campaign dedicated to raising awareness and addressing homophobia, racism and sexism on the Berkeley campus. In his various roles, Richie has educated, unified, and supported new queer students at Cal.
Heather Ross
Heather Ross is currently in her sophomore year at Cal, majoring in American Studies. She plans to pursue a Master’s Degree in Journalism at Berkeley and to someday write for a national news magazine. She has used the power of the press to generate discussions, raise awareness, and to express her support for the LGBT community. Heather also enjoys acting through Theater for Charity, writing for the Berkeley Political Review, and singing in Cal choirs. She was born and raised in Lodi, CA, but loves the Bay Area and hopes to stick around after graduating.
